Rescue & Protect Sea Turtles in Thailand and Asia

Our oceans are full of plastic, the turtles eat this plastic. Help us save them at our rehab centre

The turtle population is in a critical state worldwide, however, in areas with high tourist numbers the species is even more threatened. Our goal with this project is to create awareness around the sensitive nesting and breeding areas of these creatures, create safe and effective breeding grounds for them as well as provide emergency care to those in need. By doing this we hope to allow for sustainable tourism that doesn’t inhibit the population growth of the turtles

Turtles need our protection and in Thailand can be considered endangered due to their vulnerable nature when laying eggs. these incredible animals need dark and quiet areas to lay their eggs but with high numbers of tourists, these areas are hard to find these days and many nests are damaged or destroyed by tourists. Our aim is to protect and support the nesting of these turtles to get them off the critical and endangered list

The growing tourism industry has put a strain on most habitats, especially in the more beautiful areas. Thailand is no exception with their very sensitive turtle population becoming increasingly threatened. Fortunately, with tourists forced to stay home during the pandemic, we can see a huge increase in populations, however, with borders opening again, it is going to have a huge effect on these creatures as they are nesting on deserted beaches. We need to provide a safe space for them

This project aims to protect the critical population of the turtles in Thailand by providing a safe area for turtles to lay their eggs so that they continue to populate even when the tourists arrive back to the beaches. Our goal is to promote sustainable tourism as we aware that the islands heavily rely on this for an income, however, it needs to be in a way that doesn’t affect local species. We will create awareness, monitor turtles and create protected areas that can be overseen by the locals

By providing protected areas we hope to grow the population of turtles in Thailand and get them off the endangered list. We know that this project will work as we have seen a huge increase in numbers since tourism has been put on hold for the past months. Creating awareness and educating tourists as well as the locals will also help to conserve habitats for all species, not just for the turtles, as people begin to change their actions. Sustainable tourism is the way forward

From Hatchlings to the Horizon

By Paula the Shark | Project Leader

Dear Friends and Supporters,

In the coastal regions of Thailand, the health of the ocean is the heartbeat of the community. But for the Green and Olive Ridley turtles that call these waters home, the journey from egg to adult is more treacherous than ever. This quarter, your support has allowed the Action Change team to remain on the front lines of marine conservation, ensuring these ancient mariners have a fighting chance.

The Sanctuary: Care Beyond the Coast

Our turtle conservation centre is currently home to dozens of young turtles that require specialised care. Some were rescued from ghost nets (discarded fishing gear), while others were the “runts” of their nests hatchlings too weak to make the initial scramble to the sea.

What your support has achieved this quarter:

  • Daily Rehabilitation: Our team spends hours every day cleaning tanks, monitoring water salinity, and hand-feeding injured turtles. This meticulous care is what allows a turtle with a damaged flipper or a cracked shell to eventually return to the wild.

  • Microplastics & Water Quality: We have been conducting regular beach clean-ups and water testing. Removing plastic from the shoreline isn’t just about aesthetics; it’s about preventing a hatchling’s first meal from being a piece of lethal debris.

  • Educational Outreach: We’ve welcomed local school groups to the center to learn about the “Three R’s”: Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. By teaching the next generation that a healthy ocean means a healthy Thailand, we are building a long-term defense for the reef.

The Challenges We Face

Conservation is a labor-intensive mission, and the costs of maintaining a specialized marine facility are constant. To keep our turtles swimming toward a better future, we manage significant overheads:

  • Medical & Food Supplies: High-quality nutrition and specialized vitamins are essential for growing hatchlings and recovering adults.

  • System Maintenance: Keeping our salt-water filtration systems running 24/7 is vital to prevent bacterial infections among our residents.

  • Staffing: Our dedicated team of conservationists and volunteers works around the clock, especially during nesting seasons when beach patrols are critical.

Building a Sustainable Blue Economy

We believe that conservation must work with the people, not against them. By involving local fishers in our rescue efforts and providing educational resources to the tourism sector, we are creating an environment where turtles are seen as a precious natural resource to be protected by all.

How your past support keeps making waves:

  • £25 helps provide the medical supplies needed for one turtle’s monthly check-up.

  • £100 supports a community beach patrol to identify and protect new nesting sites.

  • £500 helps maintain our water filtration systems for an entire month, ensuring a clean environment for our rescued residents.

Thank you for being the wind in our sails and the protectors of Thailand’s seas. Because of you, more hatchlings are reaching the horizon than ever before.

With gratitude and “Sawatdee,”

Are we prepared for the nesting season across Asia

By Dee Dee | Turtle Rescue Volunteer September 2025

Dear Fabulous Supporters Around the World!

Thanks to your generous support, we continue to protect and preserve Thailand’s endangered sea turtles—and the past few months have been full of meaningful progress!

What’s been happening?
Our team has been busy expanding our conservation efforts during the quieter months, focusing on hatchling care, beach maintenance, and habitat monitoring. A number of hatchlings successfully made their journey from sand to sea this quarter, thanks to vigilant egg protection and guided releases. We’ve also been conducting regular beach patrols to keep nesting areas safe from pollution and human disturbance.

Behind the scenes, we’ve delivered additional environmental education sessions to local youth and visitors, sharing why sea turtle conservation is so important—not just for the turtles themselves, but for the entire marine ecosystem.

What’s next?
With nesting season approaching, we’re gearing up to strengthen our efforts. This means preparing for more beach surveillance, supporting hatchery improvements, and continuing to engage local communities in conservation. We’re also updating our monitoring tools to help track turtle activity more efficiently and respond faster when nests are at risk.

Every milestone we reach is because people like you believe in protecting what matters. You’ve helped us safeguard this fragile cycle of life—one turtle at a time—and your impact is real.

If you’d like to continue following our journey or help us keep momentum going, staying connected to this project is one of the best ways to make a lasting difference.

We thank you for supporting us and making work possible!
