Marine Education in Caqalai

Improving the education of children by introducing them to the underwater world

Through the environmental outreach program that is run by GVI on the island of Moturiki it has become clear that the underwater world is a mystery to most of the young people of the island, with children scared of imaginary creatures lurking in the deep as they have never seen under the waters surface. We would like to improve the education of the children by introducing them to the underwater world.

The reefs around Moturiki are already degraded and not the best areas to inspire the children to protect the reef. Having already raised funds in 2018 for fins, masks and snorkels for the children, we would like to introduce a program to bring the children to Caqalai, plus raise some more funds for life jackets.

In addition to the environmental outreach program already run at the schools, we would like to offer the children in the classes that we teach an introduction to the underwater world. We would bring them to Caqalai, teach them basic marine creature identification, and take them in the water for a snorkel point out. The children could then draw the fish that they saw and give a small presentation on their favourite thing about the fish.

To improve the education of the children of Moturiki on the under water world, encouraging them to care about the environment and to become community leaders in it’s protection.
