Ocean Restoration: Africa’s First Living Sea Wall

We’re building our first ever Living Sea Wall in Africa! Let’s Restore our Oceans together

We are making history by bringing the award-winning Living Seawall technology to South Africa. This project focuses on the installation of 100 specialised habitat panels in the heart of the V&A Waterfront, Cape Town. This high-traffic area serves as a global stage for marine conservation. Each £550 panel provides a home for indigenous South African species, creating a vertical reef in the Atlantic Ocean. This is a landmark collaboration between local stakeholders and global experts.

Cape Town’s vibrant Atlantic coastline is under constant pressure from urban development. Traditional harbour walls at the V&A Waterfront are necessary for infrastructure and while they have done lots to protect our local ecosystem it’s time for the next chapter. Together we want to help protect and invite more ecosystems back to our harbours and this will be done through the new innovative Living Sea Wall. The first on African Coastlines!

The solution is a nature-based retrofit. We are installing 100 habitat panels designed to mimic the natural rocky shores of the Cape. In partnership with V&A, Two Oceans Aquarium & Rhodes University, we will conduct rigorous scientific research to monitor the return of marine life. This project turns a functional wall into a living laboratory and a public gallery. The panels provide the physical complexity needed for seaweed, fish, and invertebrates to colonise and thrive in the heart of the city.

This installation will serve as a permanent conservation landmark in South Africa, inspiring other coastal authorities to adopt sustainable practices. The project provides local employment through installation and ongoing research opportunities for South African marine scientists. By sponsoring a panel for $550, donors leave a lasting legacy on the Atlantic coast. This project proves that urban development and nature can coexist, creating a healthier, more biodiverse Waterfront.

Project Launch 30th March 2026 What is Living Sea Walls? A New Marine Home Living Seawalls aims to revolutionise the way we think about building in the ocean. In order to improve the ecological sustainability of new and existing foreshore developments we must ensure that no new development proceeds without first considering how it can benefit both humans and nature. By combining ecological and engineering knowledge, Living Seawalls is committed to developing adaptable and affordable mechanisms to bring life back into marine developments across the world. This project is focused on working with marine partners and experts to bring a new innovative opportunity to help rebuild our marine eco-system around the world. This concept and design was developed and brought to the world through the University of New South Wales and SIMs Australia. Currently Living Sea Walls can be found in Australia, USA, Ireland, United Kingdom and Brazil. The more walls we build the more impact we can have on our Oceans, in the aim not to leave anyone behind we have partnered with the famous V&A Waterfront and Two Oceans Aquarium along with SAIB at Rhodes University to manage the science and we aim to fund and install the first wall in Africa at the V&A Centre. Helping to fund this pilot program will bring awareness to African authorities, local community and organisations and the location has been strategically chosen for high footfall and easy access to help promote and drive other African countries to join forces and create walls around the continent. Help us fund this pilot and inspire change across Africa, you can sponsor one of the hundred panels on the wall for just £550 and your name/logo will be added at the site as a sponsor which is publicity you would never get in this sought after location! Let’s fund 100 panels together!
