Africa's First Living Seawall

Help turn a concrete harbour into a thriving underwater forest

We’re fitting 100 habitat panels to the seawall at the famous V&A Waterfront, turning flat concrete into a home for marine life.

THE PROBLEM

Harbour walls protect boats, but they're harming the ocean.

Coastal urbanisation has turned harbours into ecological deserts. Flat, featureless concrete sea walls may protect boats from rough waves, but they also cause serious biodiversity loss. Marine life like limpets, seaweed and small fish rely on rock-pool environments to hide, grow and thrive, yet concrete walls leave them nowhere to live.

As sea levels rise and storms grow stronger, more harbour walls are being built, putting homes, coastlines and entire ecosystems at risk. Climate change isn’t just about us — it’s about protecting the ecosystems we all depend on, and that starts small.

We have a solution, and you can help make it a reality.

THE solution

Sponsored nature-inspired panels, bolted straight onto the existing wall.

Living Seawalls’ 3D-printed panels mimic natural rockpools, crevices and ledges, creating habitats for marine life. Developed by the Sydney Institute of Marine Science and Reef Design Lab, they’ve been shown to triple biodiversity across Sydney, the UK and San Francisco.

The science

Led by NRF-SAIAB, our ecological monitoring programme tracks species richness, population density and water quality across every installed panel.

It’s the same evidence-based approach Living Seawalls panels are built on. Over 20 years of marine research shows panelled walls can support up to three times the species of a flat wall.

Sponsors of the Research Package get quarterly reports straight from this programme. You’ll see real, verified data on the difference your panel is making.
