There is something deeply moving about returning to the place where it all began.
Twenty years ago, Action Change (then known as the GVI Charitable Trust) was born out of a desire to support the resilient communities of Guatemala. This year, as we celebrate our 20th Anniversary, our CEO and one of our founding Trustees headed back to the highlands of Lake Atitlán to walk the paths where our journey started.
Seeing the communities we worked with two decades ago not just surviving, but thriving, has been the ultimate birthday gift. But it also served as a powerful reminder: while much has changed, the mission remains. Inspired by the strength of the people here, we are officially launching four new initiatives in Guatemala and we need your help to kick-start the first one.
The Goal: Feeding a Community, Seeding a Future
In rural Guatemala, chronic malnutrition still affects over 50% of children. For many students, the meal they receive at school is the only balanced nutrition they get all day and there are so many schools surviving day to day.
We know from our history here that a child who isn’t hungry is a child who can succeed. When students are well-fed, school attendance skyrockets, concentration improves, and grades soar often reaching the top 10% in the country.
We are relaunching our feeding program to reach new communities, but this time, we’re ensuring to be adding a sustainable twist.
Beyond the Bowl: Creating Self-Sufficiency
We don’t just want to provide a meal for today; we want to ensure the community can provide for itself tomorrow. While we provide immediate nutritional relief, we are simultaneously saving funds to build:
- A Community Veggie Garden: To provide fresh, organic produce year-round.
- A Chicken Farm: To create a sustainable source of protein and eggs for the school and local families.
By investing in these “living assets,” this project will eventually become financially self-sustainable, reducing the need for outside aid and putting the power back into the hands of the local community.
