Resupplying Dawasamu School in Fiji

Resupplying DDS

Prior to Cyclone Winston, GVI Fiji offered an education program at both Nauvunisea District School (NDS) and DDS. Following Cyclone Winston, we were only able to maintain the project at NDS, as all resources and supplies had been lost and damaged at both schools, and lower volunteer numbers prevented the full implementation of both programs.

In addition, both schools sustained significant infrastructure damage and DDS was unable to provide a space for us to work from in the months following the cyclone. Commencing in January 2017, we will return to DDS, offering literacy tuitions, PEMAC lessons, and one-to-one support to the students.

Beginning in October 2016, GVI staff and interns participated in multiple consultative meetings with the DDS staff and administration, discussing our future role in the school. As a result of these productive meetings, GVI Fiji will be offering our full education program in both schools.

Thanks to donations provided to the Disaster Fund we will now be able to replicate the success that the program at DDS. We have purchased a set of matching supplies for each school. Due to the nature of the program and the incomplete reconstruction of each school following Cyclone Winston, we required weatherproof storage boxes in order protect and transport our supplies daily. As well, our request purchased stationary, arts and crafts supplies, PE equipment as well as general supplies needed in addition to storage materials to enable volunteers to make a significant contribution to learning and literacy at DDS, and make the most of their time and skills on project.

We have used a total of 2283 Fijian Dollars to purchase
Storage Boxes
Stationary
Books
Sports Equipment
General Supplies
