Africa’s First Living Sea Wall is Coming to Cape Town: How You Can Help

The ocean is the lifeblood of our planet, but urbanisation has often replaced natural coastlines with cold, flat concrete. At Action Change, we wanted to turn these lifeless sea walls into thriving, underwater ecosystems and this is when we met and partnered with the amazing Living Sea Walls Team at the University of New South Wales in Australia and their partnership with Sydney Institute of Marine Science and Reef Design where they had come up with the concept that changes everything.

Today, we are thrilled to announce that our vision is becoming a reality in a massive way as we bring the first ever living sea wall to Cape Town South Africa in partnership with some amazing partners. Living Sea Walls has now successfully installed walls in the United States, Brazil, United Kingdom and Ireland and now we are officially bringing the first-ever Living Sea Wall to Africa! In partnership with the famous Victoria & Alfred Waterfront team, Two Oceans Aquarium and SAIAB and National Research Foundation at Rhodes University we’re ready to launch!

A Global Movement for Marine Biodiversity

What started as a simple concept in Australia has created a literal “ripple effect” across the world’s oceans. Currently, four living walls in Australia are producing mind-blowing biodiversity research as well as the others around the globe. These walls aren’t just infrastructure; they are bustling underwater neighbourhood’s where marine life is reclaiming its territory.

From the UK and Ireland to Boston and Brazil, the movement is growing. Now, we are setting our sights on the vibrant waters of Cape Town, South Africa.

Why Cape Town?

Cape Town is home to some of the most unique marine biodiversity on Earth. By installing a massive 100-panel Living Sea Wall in the heart of the city, we are creating a sanctuary in the Atlantic.

These specialized panels are designed to mimic natural rock pools and crevices, providing a foundation for:

  • Kelp forests to take root.
  • Tiny fish and crustaceans to find shelter.
  • Filter-feeding organisms to improve water quality.

This isn’t just a construction project; it’s a reef built from the ground up.

We Need Your Help to Make a Splash

The energy in our team is electric as we prep designs and coordinate with local partners. However, we cannot do this alone. To make history in the Atlantic, we need to fund the production and installation of all 100 panels.

The Cost of a Colony: Each specialised panel costs £550 to manufacture, transport, and expertly install underwater as well as cover our research for 2 years to be showcased internationally. These panels also have an expected life span of 20 years so that is just £27.50 a year for an incredible life changing impact, does your CSR strategy give an impact that big for so cheap?

We are currently in a race to raise the funds to get these panels into the water as soon as possible. Whether you fund a full panel or make a smaller contribution, you are directly responsible for creating a new home for South Africa’s incredible sea creatures. Also if you want to get involved with your CSR initiative then we are offering panel sponsorship where you can sponsor 1 panel (or more) and have yoour logo recognised at this high footfall incredible site as well as be part of our media for the first wall in Africa.
